How does it grow?
How to use it at home, day by day and week by week
- day 0 Prepare Bring the syringe to room temperature and shake it. Clean the sterile grain bag or jar and your work area.
- day 0 Inoculate Flame the needle and inject 2–3 cc per kg of grain through the port. Tape any hole.
- 1–2 wk Colonising Keep it in the dark at the species' colonising temperature. Shake gently at 30% white.
- 2–4 wk Grain spawn ready When the grain is white all through, the spawn is ready; if it is green, black or smells sour, do not use it.
- Sonra Spawn to bulk Mix the spawn into the species' substrate at 10–20% by weight; once colonised, move it to fruiting conditions.
Timings are approximate and can shift by a few days with room temperature and humidity.
Care guide
The right conditions and what to watch for
- Colonising
- 24–26 °C
- Fruiting
- 15–18 °C
- Substrate
- Grain spawn → pasteurised horse-manure compost + casing
- Timing
- Grain 14–21 days; first harvest in 6–8 weeks
Things to watch
- Making compost is the hardest part; use ready-made compost on your first try.
- Before each inoculation wear gloves, wipe surfaces with 70% alcohol, flame the needle and let it cool.
- Work in a closed room with no draughts; a still air box helps.
- Keep the syringe in the fridge (2–6 °C); let it reach room temperature and shake gently before use.
Problems and fixes
- Mycelium has settled, the liquid is clear
- That is normal; it sinks. Shake before use.
- Grain not white after a week
- The room may be cool or the dose too small: check the temperature and be patient.
- Sour smell or wet grey patch in the grain
- It is bacterial: throw the bag away unopened and flame the needle better next time.
